Causes of High Radon Gas Levels

If you are concerned about the Radon Gas levels in your home, you have every right to be. Radon Gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause for non-smokers. Your risk of contracting lung cancer increases exponentially if you are exposed to high levels of radon gas.

A large percentage of Ohio homes have high exposure levels to radon gas because of how they are built. Also, many Ohio homes have basements that are used as part of the living space, which puts family members closer to the source of the problem.

Common Causes of High Radon Gas Levels in your Home: Causes of high radon gas levels

Soil

One of the leading causes of high radon gas levels in a home is the natural radioactive decay of uranium. Uranium can be found in:

  • Soil
  • Rocks
  • Water

The decomposition process of uranium releases radon gas into the atmosphere. If there is radon gas in the soil underneath the foundation of your home, it will find it's way through the basement and ventilation systems which will become trapped in your home.

Radon gas can also be found in the soil underneath your child's school or at your place of work. If you are breathing in radon gas in all of these places your risk of contracting lung cancer could increase.

Water

Radon gas can also be found in your home's water supply. Whenever you use water in your house, such as:

  • Taking a shower
  • Using the sink
  • Running the washing machine

This will release radon gas into the air to be ingested into the lungs. Any public or private wells could carry radon in the water putting homeowners at risk.

Entry of Radon Through Soil

When radon gas enters the home through the soil, it's primary means for entering are:

  • Cracks in the foundation
  • Construction joints
  • Gaps around service pipes
  • Cavities inside walls

Radon gas may appear in your home and not your next door neighbors. The only way to know for certain if radon gas has entered your home is through certified radon testing.
